Ten People to Rock Your Career in 2010
Phew-you made it through
2009. This was a tough one and you are still here. You even have some energy
left over to plan for and aspire to and maybe even obsess about what lies ahead.
Good for you. We are starting a new decade of the 21st century. This year will be more prosperous and
more successful…and it is all up to us right? We have to make it happen in our
business. [Can you feel the muscles tensing up? The temperature rising?]
Well, if there is one
thing I have learned it is that it takes a village to build a career. We never do it alone. There is always a
trail of people -some out in front and some hidden in the background who get us
to where we need to be. If you are aiming for a successful year, you need your
people. So that is my gift to you this year. I’ve got people! [Take a deep
breath now. It gets easier.]
I have come up with my top
10 list of people who can rock your career. This is not a list of my buddies.
While I have close connections to some of the people, other connections are
more distant. But I can vouch for their brilliance and their ability
to add value. And I can vouch for their consistency, and their commitment
to what they do. I can also tell you that each of these people have the
capacity to surprise, to make you laugh and to be human- just like you and me. Here
they are in alphabetical order by their first name. [Why not?]
- Danielle LaPorte of White Hot Truth
Danielle’s
Fire Starter session
is invaluable for you at any stage of your career --from early idea to well
established rut. She is thorough, quick and intuitive. Her soft spoken style is
deceptive. This woman won’t mince words to let you know what you need to hear.
And you will be better for the listening. Her questions alone are priceless,
but add the brainstorming, cheerleading, taped session and list of resources
and you can’t go wrong.
- Havi Brooks of The
Fluent Self
First
off I should tell you, you may not be Havi’s “right
people”. But if you are, this is one brilliant lady who is all about getting
you unstuck [“destuckification” in Havi’s lexicon] and
onto the path of getting your message, or product out in to the world. Take a
look at her published offerings.
She is also one of the few people who make me laugh out loud on a daily basis.
- Isabel Parlett of Parlance Training
I
have been on several calls led by Isabel and have always come away with new
strategies for finding the words to talk about the very elusive stuff that
happens in my work with clients. She really helps you get to the heart of the
matter and gets you over the hump so many of us struggle with – how do I
talk about what I do and how can I reach the clients I am meant to serve?
- Jane Pollak of Leading Remarkable Women to Uncommon
Success
Jane
is the most incredible combination of gentle soul and sharp-thinking business
woman and her offerings to career women are varied and valuable. You can be part
of a mastermind/coaching
group or you can go
on retreat to plan your future, you can do one-on-one coaching sessions and you can
network with 30 other business women in your region. She will keep you on track.
- Jonathan Fields of Career Renegade
If
you haven’t bought the
book yet, that is your first step. Jonathan is incredibly generous with
what he knows and what he has learned how to do in launching multiple careers.
If you want to work with someone who knows what it means to take considered
risk on behalf of what matters most-he is your guy. One-on-one,
workshops or lectures find a way to become a member of his tribe.
- Kaytlyn Sanders of Beneficial Design
An
environmentally conscious web designer who really IS A DESIGNER! Kaytlyn takes
the time to understand what you and your career are about. She will start
thinking with you about how to maximize the platform not only for what you do
today but for what you might do tomorrow. She is herself a small business owner
of not one but 2 businesses. Her recent venture SOSTANE is an incredibly inspirational model
for communal connection and change around sustainability.
- Laura West of the Center for Joyful Business
If
the dream that inspired you to do what you do is starting to feel like a yoke
around your neck or you are simply stalled out, then you really need Laura.
Laura will help you bring ease, and joy to the table. First, buy her Joyful Business Guide which is
an incredibly powerful tool for planning and sustaining business growth. The
guide is your ticket into a community of other small businesses owners who meet
monthly to explore ways to maximize use of the guide. There are also several
other workshops,
programs and retreats designed to help you with the basics
–marketing, money and a business mindset.
- Leo Babauta of Zen Habits
If
you want to develop the habits of heart, mind and body that will sustain you
through the next year of career building, you want to start reading Leo. You
can read his books or you can read his blogs. He has advice and he has
experience that will challenge your status quo and move you toward becoming the
kind of person who people want to be connected to.
- Pema Teeter of Ink
Street
You
have a message but you have never been and will never be a writer? You need to
present your business in person and on the web and you haven’t found the right
hook to draw people in? It’s all about the story and Pema is your storyteller. A talented writer and editor, she
also knows how to draw you out so that she can help you frame the story that
needs to be told.
- Pearl
Mattenson (c’est moi)
Here
is how I can become one of your people this year. Is your career success linked
to partnerships you have with others? Are you working with others to build (or
run) your business or organization? Do you perhaps have a family run business?
Are you leading a team that is not really functioning like a team and the work
is suffering? This year I am opening up new coaching slots for teams and partnerships. I
will come in (actually or virtually) and work with all of you to create some
alignment and get you moving to where you need to go—together.
Ready,
set, go get your people!
